My goal is to edit conscientiously to create clear, well-structured writing that makes it easy for readers to understand your message and research results.
My intention is to retain your voice as the author, while transforming complex writing into a compelling, easily understood narrative.
Having an editor review your writing can save you time and give you an alternative perspective on your prose.
Developmental editing (grant summary pages)
Developmental editing of grant summary pages (e.g., NIH specific aims, NSF project summary) involves high-level feedback regarding areas for improvement of flow and logic. Questions are asked to guide authors to include new and relevant content to meet grant requirements and reviewer expectations. Documents are reviewed to create a clear, concise, credible, and compelling narrative.
Line editing
Line editing includes the services offered for copyediting with a heavier touch, involving rearranging and rewriting sentences and paragraphs to improve flow and logic. Rewriting suggestions are usually given as Microsoft Word comments, so that authors can choose the best phrasing for their intended meaning.
Copyediting
Copyediting involves a light touch at the sentence level to adjust spelling, punctuation, grammar, and syntax. The text is edited for clarity, consistency, and conciseness. Suggestions for rearranging sentences to improve sentence structure may be given.
A style guide (Chicago Manual of Style, American Medical Association Manual of Style, or a journal’s style) is used to inform the edits.
Tables and figure legends are edited. Figure images are commented on when necessary. Abbreviations are defined on first use.
References and citations are not edited.
Cover letter development
A cover letter introducing the article to be submitted is written using the requirements of the journal of interest.
Reference formatting
References and citations are edited to match the required style (Chicago Manual of Style, American Medical Association Manual of Style, or a journal’s style).
